How Long Should a Wedding Ceremony Be?

Typical wedding ceremony lengths and how to choose the right one for your guests and your venue.

  • Under 10 minutes — legal essentials, vows, rings. Perfect for elopements.
  • 10–15 minutes — the most common length for a personalized ceremony.
  • 15–20 minutes — room for a reading, a story and a unity element.
  • 20–30 minutes — religious ceremonies, multiple readings, family participation.
  • 30+ minutes — full faith traditions or ceremonies with music and several participants.

Standing guests, hot afternoons and small children all argue for shorter. Seated guests, shade and a story worth telling argue for longer.

So… which one is your wedding?

A $150 paperwork wedding, or a ceremony built for the two of you.
